چکیده

This paper introduces the establishment of PolyU near-infrared face database (PolyU-NIRFD) and presents a new coding scheme for face recognition. The PolyU-NIRFD contains images from 350 subjects, each contributing about 100 samples with variations of pose, expression, focus, scale, time, etc. In total, 35,000 samples were collected in the database. The PolyU-NIRFD provides a platform for researchers to develop and evaluate various near-infrared face recognition techniques under large scale, controlled and uncontrolled conditions. A new coding scheme, namely directional binary code (DBC), is then proposed for near-infrared face recognition. Finally, we provide three protocols to evaluate and compare the proposed DBC method with baseline face recognition methods, including Gabor based Eigenface, Fisherface and LBP (local binary pattern) on the PolyU-NIRFD database. In addition, we also conduct experiments on the visible light band FERET database to further validate the proposed DBC scheme. 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Palm Vein Recognition Using Directional Features Derived from Local Binary Patterns

Vein-based biometrics is a newly developed technology for personal recognition, and it is widely used in practice and intensively studied. This paper proposes a method for palm vein recognition based on the directional information derived from local binary patters. In the proposed method, palm vein images are firstly enhanced using a multi-scale Gaussian matched filter to emphasize vein pattern...

Automatic Face Recognition via Local Directional Patterns

Automatic facial recognition has many potential applications in different areas of humancomputer interaction. However, they are not yet fully realized due to the lack of an effectivefacial feature descriptor. In this paper, we present a new appearance based feature descriptor, the local directional pattern (LDP), to represent facial geometry and analyze its performance inrecognition. An LDP feat...

DBC based Face Recognition using DWT

The applications using face biometric has proved its reliability in last decade. In this paper, we propose DBC based Face Recognition using DWT (DBCFR) model. The Poly-U Near Infra Red (NIR) database images are scanned and cropped to get only the face part in pre-processing. The face part is resized to 100*100 and DWT is applied to derive LL, LH, HL and HH subbands. The LL subband of size 50*50...

Derivative Variation Pattern for Illumination-invariant Image Representation

This paper presents a novel image descriptor called Derivative Variation Pattern (DVP) and its application to face and palmprint recognition. DVP captures image variations in both the frequency and the spatial domains. The effects of uncontrolled illumination are compensated in the frequency domain by discarding the illumination affected frequencies. Image pixels are encoded as binary patterns ...

Local Derivative Pattern with Smart Thresholding: Local Composition Derivative Pattern for Palmprint Matching

Palmprint recognition is a new biometrics system based on physiological characteristics of the palmprint, which includes rich, stable, and unique features such as lines, points, and texture. Texture is one of the most important features extracted from low resolution images. In this paper, a new local descriptor, Local Composition Derivative Pattern (LCDP) is proposed to extract smartly stronger...
